Auto Burglary Suspect Arrested

In response to recent vehicle burglaries, the Huntsville Police Department conducted a surveillance operation, assisted by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force, January 18 and 19.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., undercover surveillance officers observed a suspect entering unlocked vehicles in the Shenanigan’s night club parking lot and stealing property. As officers approached the suspect, he fled in his vehicle, a 2011 BMW. The suspect drove recklessly at a high rate of speed through the parking lot, nearly striking officers and civilians, and continued to accelerate past the crowded entrance to Shenanigan’s, ultimately striking several vehicles and causing extensive damage. The suspect then fled on foot, and was taken into custody after a short chase. Officers recovered several items of stolen property in addition to a handgun with obliterated serial numbers.

The suspect was identified as Parker Louis Byrd, a 19-year-old Huntsville resident. Byrd was arrested and charged with six misdemeanors and five felonies, including:

(2) counts of Burglary of a vehicle (MA);

(1) Reckless Driving (MA);

(1) Unlawful carry of a weapon (MA);

(1) Evading arrest on foot (MA);

(1) Tampering w/identification numbers (MA);

(1) Evading arrest with a vehicle (F3); and

(4) Aggravated assault w/a deadly weapon (F2) (victims that were nearly run over).

Thanks to the diligent work of the Huntsville Police Department, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force, a violent thief has been removed from the streets of Huntsville. City of Huntsville Director of Public Safety, Police Chief Kevin Lunsford, extended his appreciation to these agencies for their assistance in this operation. Chief Lunsford reminds citizens to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables when unattended. The majority of vehicle burglaries involve unlocked cars with valuables in plain sight.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
