Obituary for Johnny Ray Upchurch

Vietnam Combat Veteran

Services for Johnny Ray Upchurch, 69, who died Feb. 24, 2019, will be conducted Monday, March 4 at 9 a.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park Drive, Huntsville. Burial will follow in Houston National Cemetery,10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston. Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday, March 3, from 2 until 5 p.m.

Johnny, of Magnolia Texas, was born Aug. 23, 1949.

He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam attached to a tanker squadron and later as a radio operator where he saw heavy combat. Upon completion of his honorable service Johnny fell into his grandfather’s footsteps operating heavy equipment and working in the construction industry for many years. Construction and heavy equipment were always his passion though he did steer away from the industry to become a butcher it wasn’t long before he found his way back to construction eventually owning his own company.

Johnny loved spending time with his family and friends, he was a fan of all music and would often play along to a tune on his harmonica. Johnny was notorious for impromptu visits and random phone calls just to say hello, he loved playing with his grandchildren and telling stories. Johnny will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Johnny is survived by his wife Rebecca Upchurch, son Jacob Upchurch and wife Zina Upchurch, stepsons Michael Henry and Christopher Henry. Daughters Amy McRight and husband Joshua McRight, Roylinda Vigilant and husband Ira Vigilant, stepdaughter Leslie Henry, brother Danny Upchurch and wife Pam Upchurch. Johnny loved his grandchildren Caiden McRight, Aubry Upchurch, Evan McRight, Lillie Sanchez, Camellia Henry, Violet Henry, Tyler Henry, Marissa McRight, Caleb McRight, Hunter McRight Noel Foye, Ashley Frields, Alex Cates and three great grandchildren, Ariel Cates, Alan Cates and the newest addition Max Maddox.

Johnny is proceeded in death by his parents Margie and Roy Upchurch, brother Eddie Upchurch, grandson Zachary Foye.
