Teacher, coach, mentor
Services for John Oliphant, Sr. will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 24, at Holman Street Baptist Church, 3501 Holman Street, Houston, the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services with burial following in Harpers Cemtery, Huntsville.
Mr. Oliphant, daddy, brother, “PaPoo”, uncle, friend, teacher and mentor embarked on his journey to Christ Saturday, Jan. 19.
He was the consummate athlete and sports enthusiast. While attending Prairie View A&M, he excelled in both football and baseball and eventually tried out for the Oakland Raiders. John effortlessly touched many within and outside his position as architectural instructor and coach while in the Houston Independent School District at Evan E. Worthing High School.
As a mentor, he often inspired many to advance their education, with students returning his care for their love and dedication. (“He loved them back”). John worshipped with Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church, where God enlightened his life to journey to the Cross.
His embarking leaves a sadden family that will miss him incredibly. Daughter, Cynthia; son, JohnJr. as well as daughter, Patricia Williams. He also leaves his granddaughter, LaShandra(Julian Boddy). John II, Tenesheia and Teairrah Leeper, John further leaves his sister, Bama Merchant and Bennie Davison along with sister-n-laws, Joyce Washington,(Ruffin) and Alice Thomas. Finally he leaves a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, classmates, and friends and that special niece Dorothy (Kitty) Wiley.
