Obituary for J.I. Wood

WWII, Korean Marine Veteran, HISD Teacher

Services for James Ivy (J.I.) Wood, 95, will be conducted in the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Huntsville, at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 with  a Masonic Honors burial service by Forrest Lodge #19 A.F. & A.M. Pallbearers are Master Sgt. H.T. Baldwin, Duane Bradley, Jack Compton, Tracey Havard, Bobby Howard, Gary Komar, Frank Romano, and Greg Wright.Visitation will be Thursday, oct. 11, 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Wood  passed away Thursday, Oct. 4. He was born Feb. 27, 1923 in Houston, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Mathews Wood, parents Ivy Wood and Rosa Oxsheer Wood and son-in-law Lloyd Taliaferro.

He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Taliaferro, Charlotte McConnell (James), Nancy Wood (Jim Dines), seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

J.I. served in the Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict. After earning a degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech he worked throughout West Texas and eastern New Mexico in the oil fields from 1947 to 1963.

He began his teaching career in the Huntsville Independent School District in 1964 teaching Industrial Cooperative Training and mentoring young men and women. Upon retirement from the public schools he continued a very active life as owner and operator of the Wood Farm which has been in the family since the Civil War.

He was a member of the Forrest Lodge #19 as a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of Texas Teachers Association. In 2001, J.I. received a Distinguished Service Award from Sam Houston State University.

The family is very grateful for the care and dedication of his caregivers: Linda Dickey, Trina Hodge, Chad Johnson, Delois Merchant, Chris Rivers, Andrew and Lexie Tolbert and Florida Willis.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Wood-Mathews Scholarship at Sam Houston State University or the Shriner’s Hospital.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 12. Graveside services will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with Masonic Honors by Forrest Lodge #19 A. F. & A. M.
