SHSU graduate, technology employee at TDCJ, Windham, SHSU
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at 3 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville for David R. Cummings, who died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 after a long and courageous fight with cancer.
David was born March 27, 1958, in Midland, Michigan, to parents Ira James and Phyllis Cummings, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Cummings; son, Chris Cummings and wife, Tina; son, Michael Jeffcoat and wife, Liana; daughter, Jennifer Harvey; daughter, Melissa Maroni and husband Chris; brother Scott Cummings and wife, Terri; brother Kevin Cummings and wife, Liz; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
David moved ‘home’ to Lake Jackson, Texas, at age 6. After completing an Associate’s Degree at San Jacinto College, he moved to Huntsville to attend Sam Houston State University, where he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
He met his wife, Marilyn, while attending SHSU in 1994. They fell in love over a shared interest in softball, karaoke and slow dancing to Garth Brooks songs. They married in 1998 and decided that Huntsville would be their permanent home.
David worked in the technology field for 20 years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Windham School District and Sam Houston State University, while earning lifelong friendships and respect in the field. While his career was very important, his life was ruled by love and devotion for his family and friends. David was a blessing, deeply touching many hearts over the years. He also touched the lives of many others in Huntsville, picking up the dinner tab for first responders and leaving large tips folded into small triangles for the wait staff.
He will be most remembered for his love of Game of Thrones, World of Warcraft, Mexican food (but no tomatoes), and a nice, chilled glass of Merlot.
