HISD Coach Evans Announces Retirement

Huntsville ISD Announces Athletic Department Administrative Changes


 

Huntsville ISD announces upcoming changes impacting the district’s athletic department. The district would like to congratulate Coach Marcus Evans, HISD Athletic Director for Girls/Co-Ed Sports & Head Golf Coach, on his retirement announcement. This week, after a 35 year career in education, 34 of those years spent coaching, Coach Evans informed district administration that he plans to retire at the end of his contract term this school year. Coach Evans will continue on as the Head Golf Coach for the remainder of this current season. Additionally, effective Monday, March 14, just following the spring break holidays, Coach Rodney Southern, HISD Athletic Director for Boys Sports & Head Football Coach, will assume all athletic director responsibilities for all Hornet & Lady Hornet sports.

Since joining the district in 2002 at Huntsville High School, Coach Evans has been a classroom teacher of speech, theatre arts, and English, and served as Head Golf Coach, Associate Athletic Director, and the current Athletic Director for Girls/Co-Ed Sports. The district appreciates his outstanding commitment to the students and coaches of this district. Thanks to his leadership and direction, the HISD golf program is highly respected and a recognized championship program across the state.

Prior to coming to Huntsville, Coach Evans taught and coached for Bastrop ISD. His coaching career consists of 13 seasons with Huntsville and 20 seasons with Bastrop. During that time, he has received numerous coaching accolades to include 35 District Championships, 48 Playoff Teams, 9 Regional Championships, 22 State Finalist Teams, 4 State Championships, 1 State Champion Medalist, 3 Runner-Up State Championships, 6 Runner-Up State Champion Medalists, and 34 All State Players. He has also been the recipient of the THSCA Lifetime Coaching Achievement Award, TGCA Lifetime Coaching Achievement Award (2013), 3 Time Texas Golf Coach of the Year (1997, 1998, & 2003), UIL Golf Coach of the Year (2003), 2 Time Huntsville Item Coach of the Year (2012, 2014), Finalist National Coach of the Year (1997, 2003), President Texas Association of Golf Coaches (1998 – 2001), and Chairman UIL Advisory Committee on Golf (1995 – 1998).

Huntsville ISD celebrates this exiting and monumental occasion with Coach Evans and his family. The district wishes him all the joy and happiness retirement has to offer. Once a Hornet, Always a Hornet!
