Huntsville ISD Board Approves Teacher Salary Increase
On Thursday evening, May 21, 2015, the Huntsville ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve an increase for beginning teacher’s salary to $42,000 for the 2015-2016 school year. This increase is up $3,000 from the current eginning teacher pay rate.
After a long agenda handling regular monthly meeting business, trustees transitioned to a Board Workshop with the superintendent and directors to discuss the needs of the district and expected funds needed to prepare a budget for next school year. Items of discussion included the following: needs for technology, transportation, maintenance and athletics; increasing of salaries, specifically for teachers; and setting policy for keeping a minimum of three (3) months’ worth of operating funds in the fund balance. In an effort to continue making improvements to the district’s compensation plan, the recommendation was to increase beginning teacher pay to $42,000, increasing teacher’s pay by $1,500. Non-teacher salaries were also discussed, but will be addressed further into the budget process.
At the conclusion of the Budget Workshop the Board of Trustees approved by a vote of 5-0 a recommendation for the teacher compensation plan for 2015-2016 to include the following:
• A minimum salary for beginning teachers to be $42,000/year.
• Salary adjustments for teachers as provided in the compensation plan approved by the Board
• A $1,500 increase for teachers.
This action provides a significant increase in salary for teachers. The board has now increased the minimum salary for teachers $6,000 over the last two years and adjusted all teacher salaries to receive increases. It should be noted that the board does understand the importance of all staff and will address raises for non-teacher salaries later in the budget process.
