SHSU: Sam Houston Birthday Celebration Set for February 26 in Austin

All alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students are invited to join the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association in celebrating the life of Texas’s greatest hero and our university’s namesake, Sam Houston.

 

The celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 at the The Austin Club in Austin, TX featuring remarks by SHSU President Dana Hoyt.

 

One of the most colorful figures of 19th Century America, Sam Houston served as president of the Republic of Texas, governor of the State of Texas, governor of TennesseeU.S. senator, and Tennessee congressman. He led the Texas Army in the Battle of San Jacinto – the decisive victory of the Texas Revolution, which cleared the way for Texas to become a part of the United States.  A memorial museum, a U.S. Army base, a national forest, a historical park and a university have all been named in his honor.
