Josey Scout Banquet to Celebrate 85 Years of Scouting in Huntsville

by Gene Roberts

The Josey Scout Banquet is celebrating Scouting in Huntsville on February 23, 2019 at the historic Josey Scout Lodge. Established 85 years ago, the Josey Scout Lodge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

“Scouting is committed to leadership, character development, and service,” said Sandra Bounds, banquet chair. “The banquet is a time when all scouts in Huntsville and Walker County come together, share a meal, and recognize the Josey Scout of the year,” Bounds said.

The Josey Scout of the Year will be announced at the banquet. This award recognizes the best of the best in local Scouting. The selected Scout will receive a monetary award and their name will be on permanent display at the Josey Scout Lodge.

“The Josey Scout of the Year is an incredible honor,” said Karla Christian, chair emeritus of the banquet. To receive the award, a scout must complete an application, demonstrate a commitment to service, camping, and excellence in Scouting, and undergo an interview with members of the Robert A. Josey Lodge, Inc., the foundation that owns and oversees the Josey Lodge. “Previous recipients have become leaders in business, law, medicine, academics, and the community. Being a Josey Scout of the Year means something special,” Christian continued.

At this year’s banquet, Mac Woodward will deliver the keynote address. Woodward is the former mayor of Huntsville, currently the director of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, and an Eagle Scout.

“Having Mac Woodward as our keynote speaker is appropriate,” Bounds said. “Mr. Woodward is an example of the best that Scouting has to offer, with his commitment to service and to community,” Bounds stated.

The Banquet takes place on February 23, 2019, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the banquet starting at 6:30 pm at the Josey Scout Lodge, located at the intersection of Sam Houston Avenue and 22nd Street. The banquet is a ticketed event, and tickets are available by emailing JoseyScoutBanquet@gmail.com. More information is available at facebook.com/JoseyBanquet.
