City of Huntsville Needs Volunteers

City seeking volunteers to fill two positions

The City of Huntsville is looking for you! There are currently two volunteer positions available for which the City needs applicants. Such appointments are made by nominations from the Mayor and a vote of the City Council.

One opening is for service on the Cemetery Advisory Board, which offers recommendation to the Parks and Leisure Department on Oakwood Cemetery. The board supports fund raising efforts and has long had an interest in sharing the history of the cemetery with the public. The open position is for a term that runs through August 31, 2019. The Board was established in 2002 and typically meets monthly.

As part of the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC), the City has the opportunity to make nominations to certain committees. At this time, the City has an open position on the H-GAC Solid Waste Management Council for a Citizen/Environmental Group representative. H-GAC says the board and its member local governments advise the Council (the H-GAC Council, that is, or CoG, as H-GAC is a state-prescribed Council of Government) on solid waste management issues. (For the H-GAC position – On the online application, select the box for Other in the list of boards and commissions and note H-GAC Solid Waste Committee in the Additional Background Information section.) Meetings of the committee are held in Houston at the H-GAC offices, and there is no salary or compensation for serving on the committee.

To be considered for nomination, interested City residents should complete an application on the City website at http://www.huntsvilletx.gov/358/Boards-Commissions. There is a link on the page for a printable application. Paper applications are also available at City Hall; by contacting the City Secretary at CitySecretary@HuntsvilleTX.gov; or 936-291-5403.
