The Huntsville ISD Communications Department received multiple awards from the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) for excellence in school communications for work produced during the 2016 school year. The awards were announced at the TSPRA Star Awards Celebration held February 22, 2017, at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort in Galveston, Texas during the association’s 55th annual conference.
TSPRA recognizes communicators in school districts, education foundations, and educational organizations each year for their outstanding work in both print and electronic media categories. This year, 1082 entries were received across 45 main categories covering various media.
Huntsville ISD Director of Communications, Shannon Duncan, an eighthyear member of TSPRA, submitted nine pieces on behalf of the school district for consideration. Each of her entries received Star Award recognition to include four Gold Stars, four Silver, and one Bronze. Additionally, one of the Gold Star awards was also recognized as the Best of Category earning a gold medal. This is the second time Duncan has been recognized with this level of achievement in the competition. The HISD Board of Trustees recognized Duncan for her TSPRA awards during their monthly meeting held on Tuesday, March 28.
“TSPRA Star Awards represent the very best pieces of school communication in the entire state, and I am honored that our submissions were rated so highly by my peers. It is my absolute pleasure to represent our school system and this community. I’ve always been told if you can find a job you love, you’ll never work a day, and I do love what I do! I am a fellow Hornet parent, so I know how important good communication is to help keep our families and community connected and informed. I’ve never been more committed to supporting and promoting public education than I am now. I truly believe that Huntsville ISD is the very BEST choice for children in our community! It is an absolute joy and privilege to work with such amazing students and staff each day! I am blessed.”
Based in Austin, with more than 900 members, TSPRA is comprised primarily of public information and communications professionals who serve the public school districts and education organizations of Texas. TSPRA provides professional development, resources and networking opportunities for members and others in the education community.
